Bhutan Bank App opens door for cashless payment for Indian Tourist

Traveling in Bhutan is becoming easier for international visitors with the latest update to the Bank of Bhutan’s goBoB digital wallet. The upgrade introduces new features that allow tourists to set up and use the app before arriving in the country, reducing the need for cash during their stay.

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of email-based registration. Visitors can now create and verify a goBoB wallet using a one-time password sent to their email address, without needing a local SIM card or a visit to a bank branch. This allows travelers to complete the setup process from home or while in transit.

Once registered, users can add funds to their wallet using international Visa or MasterCard. The app automatically converts foreign currency into Bhutanese ngultrum, enabling seamless local payments. The wallet supports QR-code payments at a growing number of cafés, taxis, restaurants, and handicraft shops across the country.

The updated app also includes an offline payment option for areas with limited network connectivity, making it practical for travel beyond urban centers. In-app customer support is available in both English and Dzongkha, and enhanced security features such as encryption and spending alerts help protect users’ accounts.

At Paro International Airport and in major tourist areas, QR-enabled merchants and goBoB service counters are increasingly visible, supporting Bhutan’s broader push toward digital and cashless tourism. For visitors, this reduces the inconvenience of exchanging cash and simplifies day-to-day spending.
